Robot Surgeon Successfully Conducts First Ever Weight Loss Operation
A Robot successfully completed its first weight loss surgery by way of the Da Vinci robotic surgeon. The operation was performed on Jay Palmer who admitted that he wanted the bariatric surgery because he said he couldn’t keep up with his kids anymore. Not to mention, Mr. Palmer has weighs 350 lbs., has high blood pressure, cholesterol problems and sleep apnea, he was certainly a perfect candidate for this operation.
If you haven’t seen the Da Vinci robotic surgeon in action, you’ve got to check it out (see video below). Many doctors compare it to playing a video game. But this new advancement is far from a game. The da Vinci sits across the room from the operating table. The doctor then puts their hands in the controls, looked through the lens, and is able to see the patient very up close and personal. The surgery is actually being conducted 10 feet away from the patient.
The Da Vinci surgeon has already performed over 900 successful operations including open heart surgeries. A weight loss surgery is new territory for the Da Vinci robot but expect many many more in the very near future.
There are several advantages to having the Da Vinci robot as your surgeon including a much faster recovery time due to no incision or pain. This technology is quickly having positive implications across the entire Healthcare Industry.

Droid and iPad Get Married To Form AVA. Go figured…
Two of the greatest technologies in recent times are Robotics and the array of Apple’s line of products including the iPad. Put both of them together and you’ve got a match made in high tech heaven. As a world leader in utilizing mobile technology, Mt. Sinai Hospital located in downtown Toronto, is happily welcoming this marriage. The conception behind this breakthrough is iRobot, who also makes the widely popular Roomba vacuum cleaner. The name of the robot is AVAand its purpose is to act as a personal assistant for physician.
A majority of doctors already have their hands and pockets filled with the essential items needed to carry out their workdays. However, AVA robot with an iPad face will allow Physicians the ability to be more productive and efficient.
iRobot just applied for a patent for the AVA robot which will be the company’s introduction to Telepresence, which is considered a game changer in the world of travel business and healthcare. Basically, it’s a Robot Droid with an iPad face. AVA will serve as a physician’s personal assistant following doctors around acting as their consultant and person assistant. Dr. Mirek Otremba of Mt. Sinai Hospital says he’s looking forward to having an iRobot Droid AVA as a sidekick during his rounds throughout the hospital. Dr. Otemba further stated “I think it is brilliant. “I see an even greater utility if I can talk to it. It becomes a device that can follow you, almost like a team member.”
A couple other tasks that is expected by AVA is the ability to receive data that comes to you… i.e. ”Here’s a video call from Dan. Would you like to take it?” Also, for the elderly, the AVA robot will act as a server and deliver medicine and a glass of water on schedule.
We’re not quit certain when the AVA robot with be avialable to the market or how much it will cost. However, the developers of AVA have already requested that mobile app developers begin the consideration AVA-specific apps. AVA will be completely functional on iPads and Android tablets. This cool new robotic advancement sure beats the hell out of having a nagging human doctor’s assistant following you around… At least you’ll have full control over AVA.

Leave it to Solyndra to stir up some comical news related to the world of robotics. When news broke of the rumor that Solyndra once had robots that whistled Disney tunes while they worked, the media was sprung into action, anxiously excited about the opportunity to pin whatever juicy gossip they had on the company.
Well, the information they were given is in fact true. These robots or also referred to as automated guided vehicles designed to transport goods, would actually whistle while they worked. But, there’s a reason for this. Have you ever been to a Home Depot and all of a sudden heard the sounds “BEEP, BEEP, BEEP”. I’m referring to the forklifts and kubota-like vehicles they have that make sounds to alerts customers and workers that there’s a motorized vehicle in the area. That’s as annoying as listening to the song “While While You Work“.
Solyndra’s Robots do the same thing but with a twist. Instead of them making that annoying loud beeping noise, they begin to whistle Disney tunes as they approach other workers in the plant. Sounds kind of cool, right? Actually, the human co-workers weren’t too keen of the idea stating; “Music is used instead of beeping, which can drive workers nuts and sometimes they tune it out, presenting a safety hazard” according to Politifact.
Do you remember “Whistle While You Work” from the movie Snow White?
As stated above, the media eagerly stepped in chomping at the bit and began to smear the story into more juicier headlines. One example of this is when Andrew Napolitano on his Fox Business show said that Solyndra executives “entertain themselves with robots whistling Disney tunes in the hallways.”
Whistle While You Work? What Tune Would You Whistle To?
Personally, I’d think its “outside the box” thinking and pretty clever. If I owned a factory that employed moving robots that required an alert system, I’d want to do something different. But I’ve got to admit, when those vehicle sound in Home Depot, I run the other way as fast as I can because they piss my ears off. By the way, my robot workers would whistle to “Whistle While You Twurk”.
Since I couldn’t find one of these robots actually whistling while they were working, I’ve included a just released video of a face recognizing robot. watch as he checks his own self out in the mirror. Don’t forget to whistle while you work tomorrow at work…
Keep Your Kid Entertained With Fijit Friends So You Can….A New Debatable Trend That Has Some People Calling Them Bad Robots!
Parents have one of the most important jobs in the world. So, it’s no surprise that they need some “me” time to balance out their day-to-day responsibilities. The advantage to today’s world is that this is much easier to achieve than yester-years, simply because of technology. 5 years ago, who would of thought that 3 year-old’s would be walking around with Tablets filled with apps? I know I sure didn’t but I can tell you that there’s a Leap Pad wrapped underneath the tree for my little youngster this Chistmas. Times have changed. What was the norm for kids years ago is now considered boring and uncool today.
Meet Fijit Friends, an electronic talking robot toy that is sure to occupy your kids, giving you some much needed alone time. Fijit Friends is being dubbed as one of the “must have” toys, comparing it to the crazed 1998 smash hit, Furby. The owl-liked robot toy is for ages 6-12. The company that makes these Fijit Friends promises this… “Your new interactive talking and dancing friends, each with her own unique personality includingmore than 150 built-in phrases and jokes (more than most mom’s or dad’s) and “voice recognition technology.”
I wish Fijit Friends and tablets for kids were around when I was 8 instead of these toys. But there is already some controversy coming from this latest technology for kids. An example of this is when you asked the robot toy what it thinks you looked like. It’s response is “Oh yeah, looking good”. Other features that Fijit Friends do is dance to music and its belly glows which makes for a perfect nightlight. Recent technology for for kids amaze me and how much retailers are profiting from these gadgets. Tablets for Kids seem a lot more profitable than a slinky, right?
Another controversy to this is the fact that parents are throwing the latest tech without a second guess in an effort to occupy them so they can do whatever else there interested in doing. A case study of this was conducted by the United National Children’s Fund. This organization is against the notion of giving too many tech gadgets to our young children. The report, tested on 250 children, found that kids was dependent on spending time with a stable family and enjoying activities that includes the outdoors versus owning the latest tech device like Fijit Friends for the latest tablets for kids.
Personally, I agree with the study but often times, I hear elderly people saying “If you grew up during our time, you’d be outside enjoying life instead of having your brain embellished in those gadgets.” That’s a true statement because technology for kids wasn’t around then and the world didn’t have iPad’s and iPod’s much less colored TV’s. However, I completely understand that a mix of traditional and modern activities are needed in our kids life in order to effectively develop them into today’s society. Yes, family is the most important, but also consider the profound impact technology is having on the world. Anyways, when I’m old and gray, I’ll be telling my great grand kids, “See, when I grew up, you cooked your own food, you washed your own dishes and clothes. We even mowed our lawn. You kids nowadays have it made with these household robots. They do all of that for you and you even take it for granted. If you ran out of milk, you had to literally get in the car and drive to the local convenience store to buy a gallon of milk…”
Fijit Friends retails for $59 and is available at your local Toys R Us store. Check out this new HD video below of a youngster playing with Fijit Friends… And if you think your kids got talent to be famous, check out this brand new website that designed to get people discovered.
Before we get into the Top 5 Toy Robots this Christmas, I’m wondering why does good news always have to involve a negative spin to it?
Today is Cyber Monday and I’m glad to report that people spent more money this year than last. Storefront sales were up nearly 7% from 2010 and Online Sales grew a staggering 23% year over year which I’m sure included many purchases of toy robots. This is great news as the economy continues to improve. However, what frustrates me is when all these news outlets continue to report positive news with a negative spin. Examples of this in today’s news; “Black Friday is a Win, But there’s a Downside for Retailers” or “Black Friday sales indicate Hope for America.” Why can’t it just be left that, Black Friday sales went up over the year prior, instead of adding a contradictory twist to it resulting in continual fear in the consumer. A lot of the hesitation to spend is based on the perception that the economy is on the verge of another recession. This perception is created daily by the media.
Anyways, now on to toy robots for the holidays… With the good news in consumer spending over the weekend, I’m sure today is going to be just as successful if not more than the numbers above.
